Froth Tech Newsletter #9

We hope you've had a smooth start to 2022 despite the curve balls that have come our way. The beer is still flowing thanks to local supply chain resilience here in NZ. Here at Froth Technologies we have been busy raising more yeast than ever, and sending out the goods to our awesome brewery customers all over the country, for batches of beer anywhere from 150 litres - right up to 25,000 litres!

Local breweries still need your support more than ever, so please help out your local by buying their tasty brews. We are so stoked to see more breweries showcasing the flavours of Aotearoa by brewing beers with 100% NZ ingredients - Water, Malt, Hops, and of course arguably the most important ingredient... Yeast! And we've just seen another awesome fresh hop season with a wide range of beer styles liberally dosed with fresh harvested hops, from breweries all over the nation.

Our hearts go out to the beer festivals and events around NZ that have had to cancel or postpone due to Covid-19, but it's great to see how flexible and resilient Kiwis can be, and we're looking forward to the next opportunities for craft enthusiasts to get together and sample the best beers in the world.

Here's what's been happening lately at Froth Technologies...

COLLAB BREW:
Frothin' India Pale Lager (IPL)

Have you tried our latest collab beer?  Frothin' is a cutting-edge beer by Miramar's Double Vision Brewing, brewed in collaboration with Froth Technologies. This India Pale Lager (IPL) is a hybrid style that marries together the hop-forward character of an IPA with the crisp fermentation profile of a Lager, and was crafted using all New Zealand ingredients. This experimental beer is cold-fermented using Froth Tech's German Lager yeast 'Krisp' and explores cold dry-hopping techniques that contradict long established brewing practices but are backed up by science, to extract the most desirable flavour and aroma compounds from the hops.
The result: a 100% Kiwi beer that is crushable, crisp, and bursting with flavour.

🎥 Watch our slick video to see how it was made!

Flavours: NZ Pilsner Malt with a touch of Toffee Malt make a crisp, mild body. A combination of NZ hops: Nelson Sauvin, Motueka and Taiheke bring notes of crushed gooseberries (Kiwifruit is a type of gooseberry), tropical fruit, resinous lemon zest and lime.

OUR IMPACT:
Carbon zero and beyond

At Froth Technologies, our vision is for NZ craft beer to be the highest quality and most sustainable in the world. There are a number of inspiring breweries and businesses right through the supply chain that are stepping into the the age of responsibility and really leading by example when it comes to sustainable business practices. Froth Technologies is determined to be one of those businesses.

Right from day one we have designed our business through a lens of sustainability & regeneration, guided by our triple bottom line:
Earthlings (beings that call Earth home),
Environment (planet Earth)
Enterprise (sharing value to turn a profit).

We are pleased to announce that we have just signed on with Ekos to measure our carbon footprint and offset that beyond zero to 120% Climate Positive. This means that rather than just neutralising our own carbon footprint to zero, we go further in pursuit of a zero carbon economy by offsetting 120% of our carbon emissions - kind of like going for a picnic at the park and picking up your own rubbish when you leave, then picking up those extra bits that someone else left behind too.

One of our main drivers for starting Froth Technologies was the pursuit of sustainability in beer, and we are so proud of our yeast products made that we make with local ingredients, and how that has empowered NZ breweries to brew outstanding beers with all NZ ingredients.

BREWERY PROFILE:
Aotea Brewing Co.

Did you know there is a brewery on Great Barrier Island? Well let us introduce you to Aotea Brewing Co, a unique brewing operation built into shipping containers that embraces deep sustainability practices. This brewery is fully off-grid, and their beer is not sold in single use packaging like bottles or cans - just flagons and kegs. When the team at Aotea got in touch looking to get their hands on some Froth Tech yeast, we thought it might be a challenge getting it there cold & quick. But thanks to the teams at NZ Couriers and Barrier Air, we've been sending fresh pitches of yeast over to the island for the team to use in their unique brewhouse. It's the yeast we can do.

Hoppiness

The same author also wrote a more beer industry focused article for Pursuit of Hoppiness magazine, with the godfather of craft beer Richard Emerson weighing in on how NZ-raised yeast from Froth Technologies has contributed to their ongoing brewing success. You can read that one here.
